What to Expect on CELPIP Test Day: A Simple Guide

Registering for the Test Before you can take the CELPIP, you need to book your spot. You can register online, by mail, or in person at the CELPIP offices in Vancouver or Toronto. There is no walk-in registration, so make sure to book your test well in advance. On the day of your test, remember that you must bring acceptable photo identification and your test admission ticket. If you do not have these, you will not be allowed to take the exam.

Inside the Testing Center: Conditions and Challenges

1. The CELPIP test is done entirely on a computer. In the testing room, you will sit at a computer terminal with a privacy shield to block your view of other people.
2. One of the biggest challenges is the noise during the Speaking section. Even though the privacy shields block your view, you may still hear others speaking at the same time. The headset you are given will help block out some of this noise, but it is important to stay focused on your own screen.
3. The rules at the testing center are very strict. You are not allowed to have food, drinks, cell phones, or electronic dictionaries. Any electronic devices must be left in a safe area provided by the center.

Mastering the Scratchpad: Note-Taking Tips

A very helpful tool for you is the scratchpad. At the start of the test, you will get paper and a pencil to organize your thoughts. These notes are collected at the end of the exam, but they are not scored.

• For Listening Tasks: As the audio clips get longer, notes help you remember important details. Write down key words instead of full sentences so you do not miss new information. For tasks with multiple people, try dividing your paper into columns to track what each person says.
• For Speaking Tasks: You only have 30 to 60 seconds to prepare before the recording starts. Use your scratchpad to quickly outline your answer. Write down your main opinion and two or three reasons to support it. This helps you focus on your speaking and vocabulary while you are recording, instead of worrying about what to say next.
